Damn You Willow
Chapter one:
The Academy

It was after the elementary school graduation that Xander learned his two friends wouldn’t be in town for the summer, and that his Uncle Rory had set him up to go to a Summer School out of town for the term.
He would be driven to the right bus out in LA by his uncle early in the morning, so the short time he got to spend with his friends was duly treasured.

The next morning before dawn, Xander was forced into his uncle’s car to head out to LA and the station he would travel from with his uncle smart enough to have strong coffee to dump down his nephew’s mouth to get his ADHD problems calmed down when he woke up. Which was halfway through the second cup of marine coffee.

Xander watched as they bypassed the Greyhound bus terminal and turned down a hidden side street to a better lite one that said it was the Canyon terminal and parked. His uncle turning off the car and getting out while he answered Xander’s unasked question with “This is why we drove in; Greyhound doesn’t link up at all and the car services never seem to find the place.”

Xander was given a ruck sack that used to belong to Rory back in the days of ‘Nam and walked inside the terminal to the front desk to check in and then wait to get on the bus to start his journey. Watching all the others coming in and laughing with yet others they met there. Talking in strange English lingo that he had no way of understanding.

His uncle took pity on him and gave him a bit of background on where he was going. The Canyon School was a Craftsman School not a regular school. Although to be a craftsman you needed schooling as well. He had been allowed to go but his father hadn’t been able to pass the requirements, too busy being the big man on campus to even try, and his mom was too busy getting into the jocks pants to even bother with. Rory had secretly gotten his nephew tested to see if he could go. If nothing else than to get him away from his sister and her bastard of a has-bin husband.

First summer would be the basics of crafting. Drawing and Drafting and Designing. And the math that went with it. Practical math that Xander could “see” the use of and it would help him later in school as he would be putting it all into actual practice as he learned it. Too much like he and his grandfather to be taught any other way. And that was half the troubled label that was in his records as his so-called “learning disability”. Bah. He just needed to handle and talk the problem over. But the classes staff wanted cloned students who were quiet in the work instead. He would also be learning Latin as his foreign language. Again, used in a lot of the older crafting manuals he would later be going over. So, it would be useful to learn it now.

What he did not mention was that his nephew would be automatically getting the first physical in years then healing his old wounds. After that, exercises to get in shape for the following year. As the first term in the school was just setting ground foundations.

Xander figured out quickly that all the buses were set up by age, so he was in one with those in his year and not those older. Which was great as he wasn’t in the mood to put up with bullying right now.

There was assigned seating and partners that they were to be bunking with. He gave the aisle seat to Windser as he had long legs that needed to hang out in the isle, and they both acknowledged that they had never been too far from home so this whole thing was an adventure.

The bus travelled slowly on the city streets till it got on an old onramp then seemed to jump into the high gear of warp speed. Everything just blurred past them as they warped past and the kids inside like Xander who had no beginning knowledge freaked.

It only took a half hour of this type of travel for them to get used to it though. Everyone noticed that they had long since put the city behind them and it was all desert outside the blurry windows.

A little while later they began to descend into a canyon and then slow down as they traversed the canyon floor to slow to a snail’s pace as they entered the mouth of a cave and entered the school.

The first terms were separated by partners sexes, and the girls were first to head in to get the medical exams while the boys got themselves settled in the double rooms. The rooms have their own showers and bathrooms. With the Guardian student telling the boys the rules, the main one was they would have their rooms inspected every morning before breakfast and docked points if things weren’t kept in order, beds made and all that. Too many points and duty stations were done like kitchen duty or hall duty where they would have to clean and paint a hall. A work duty for their section would be assigned each week for things like sweeping the hallway connecting their rooms and room garbage duty. Laundry for their year was done by the staff in the beginning, but by the end of term they each would be responsible for their own and docked points for not keeping it up.

By the time they both got squared away in their dorm, it was their turn to go to medical for their own physical. And finding weirdness happened there too. As the doctors had each of them on what Xander would call a Star Trek Bio-Bed and the readings from it had them giving each of them nasty tasting medicines they called potions to drink and new numbers over the bed appeared.

Xander was kept overnight in a room and knocked out for the night while they did more tests and worked on some corrections.
Waking in the morning sore and disoriented till another round of nasty medicine/potions. And told he would get several vials for two weeks till he was healed. And escorted to the hall where a breakfast buffet was being held and sat with his roommate with his tray of food.
