The King Under the Mountain hadn’t listened to his advisors and turned over the item they had been asked and paid to make from the local Wood Elves. He had even gone so far as to insult their own King.
A King who had his magic users curse the Dwarven King’s line with Gold Sickness stating that was all they cared for.

The old Dwarven King began to covet his hoard and refused to allow any out, by claiming it all belonged to him, slowly bending in body as he counted his treasure, his skin got harsher and more like leather, then like a reptile. His speech is deeper and harsher. His rooms where his hoard was gathered filling more with the stench of brimstone and the feeling of steam.

All until the mighty Smaug Dragon attacked them within their own caverns with death on his mind and fire breath for being near his hoard of treasure. Finally driving those who survived out and away from HIS mountains and HIS treasure.
The secret of where he came from and who he had been died with those who had been closest to him in the first flames of his attack. Never knowing that his own grandchild would be the one to aid in his own downfall. Then the downfall of his line and the curse set by the Elves so long ago.

All because the King Under the Mountain had refused to follow up on his own obligations was his people and line to be destroyed in the end.
