HP, Fourth Year, Harry Potter, Moody, Questions Asked During Class,
“The Cruciatus Curse,” said Moody. “Needs to be a bit bigger for you to get the idea,” he said, pointing his wand at the spider. “Engorgio!” The spider swelled. It was now larger than a tarantula. Abandoning all pretense, Ron pushed his chair backward, as far away from Moody’s desk as possible.
Moody raised his wand again, pointed it at the spider, and muttered, “Crucio!” At once, the spider’s legs bent in upon its body; it rolled over and began to twitch horribly, rocking from side to side.
No sound came from it, but Harry was sure that if it could have given voice, it would have been screaming. Moody did not remove his wand, and the spider started to shudder and jerk more violently — Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (p. 86). Pottermore Publishing. Kindle Edition.
Harry looked up slightly from the spider to Moody’s face, and the slight malicious grin on it, then the frown as if his game had been ruined when Hermione yelled out for the man to stop because Neville was having a reaction to his fun.
Thing was, Harry had read up on the three Unforgivables in his first year after hearing about them and how one in particular had played into his family’s death. And you needed pure hate to use that one. Hatred much like Voldies followers seemed to have in spades during and after the war.
“Ah,” said Moody, another slight smile twisting his lopsided mouth. “Yes, the last and worst. Avada Kedavra . . . the Killing Curse.” He put his hand into the glass jar, and almost as though it knew what was coming, the third spider scuttled frantically around the bottom of the jar, trying to evade Moody’s fingers, but he trapped it, and placed it upon the desktop. It started to scuttle frantically across the wooden surface.
Moody raised his wand, and Harry felt a sudden thrill of foreboding. “Avada Kedavra!” Moody roared. Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (pp. 86-87). Pottermore Publishing. Kindle Edition.
Again, Harry refused to watch the spider, but watched the happy Moody decimate the spider.
Moody swept the dead spider off the desk onto the floor. “Not nice,” he said calmly. “Not pleasant. And there’s no countercurse. There’s no blocking it. Only one known person has ever survived it, and he’s sitting right in front of me.” Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (p. 87). Pottermore Publishing. Kindle Edition.
Harry got up, and casually walked up to the desk now. Facing the leery Moody. Bent down and gently picked up the spider, laying it on the desk for all to see.
“Yes, there is truth in some of what you say.” He cast an engorgio on the spider so the rest of the class could see it. “As everyone can see,” he stripped the “fur” off the insect, “it leaves no mark.” He lifted the larger animal up and slowly rotated it 360 degrees for all to see they were both correct on that.
“So, the question remains,” He continued to rotate the animal over the desk, “Why was I left a curse mark if it leaves no mark?” His off arm lifted his bangs to show his famous scar for all to look at for a moment, then dropped them while still rotating the spider over the desk.
Moody getting antsy.
“There were five people there that night, before Black and Hagrid showed up. And only four were in the room during that confrontation. Riddle, aka You-Know-Who, my mum, myself, and the betrayer, Pettigrew. And Snape showed right after everything went down.
“I was 15-month’s old at the time and have yet to be interviewed on what I remember. If I had, been the travesty of Black being thrown in prison without a trial for the betrayal wouldn’t have happened, because I am the last surviving witness outside Pettigrew.”
Everyone leaned forwards, ignoring the spinning spider. Even the obviously fake Moody, who absently took a pull from his flask.
“So, I ask again, just how did the fake story of my surviving the death curse come about if the only one who witnessed the whole thing hadn’t and hasn’t been questioned? And” he again pointed at the spinning spider, “The curse leaves no scars or marks?”
He waved his wand to stop the spells he had on the spider, and gently put it in one of the jars on the desk, just as the bell rang for the class to end. But the spellbound students never moved as Harry told everyone that it would be interesting how Dowager and Regent Longbottom took Moody’s making fun of her family’s misfortune in front of the last survivor of that attack. He was certainly going to see to it he bottled the memory of the “glee” the retired auror took in doing so. And send it on to her with his letter via elf.
Grabbed his things and walked out with a quietly grieving Neville in tow.
