War – The Life of a Soldier
He remembered.
The boy he had watched grow up to be a young man had found his old military box.
And he remembered.
Questions were finally asked of that time in his life.
And he remembered.
He told the young man of a war now over, and his need to belong to something so he had signed up young. Barely out of graduation from school.
He went for the adventure and hopeful of family. He received both and lost the second to the first. All in the constant enemy action.
Their government used them in any way they could, with the lies needed for it to follow, including the fact that they ignored the enemy who used scared boys in their first enemy contact in a country that grew the world’s Poppy Fields. Many that lived through the war came home addicted just like in the previous war of their brass.
Others ate their guns to get away from the fact that they were being forced to make war on children. Children who picked up weapons and bombs to use against them and therefore were the enemies at ten or younger.
Being called out of little holes they dug to sleep in at three in the morning knowing that the enemy was closing in on their position fast. Looking to their right and left at those near them with silent contact and nods; ‘You watch my back, I’ll watch yours.’ Before kissing the head of their rifle for luck before heading out to fight the enemy once more. Knowing friends and those they considered family would die and there would be less of you there after the battle was over. This was a war of attrition in the end. A war they lost as they refused to lose anymore while the enemy was willing to use babies to win their war.
He remembers. Oh, how he remembers in his nightmares enough to wake up screaming and being held by his lover as he tried to recover from being on the front lines again.
Eddie and Chris were finally able to force the brass above their Captain to allow Eddie and Buck the time off they both needed to see too both their Combat PTSD now that it was raising its ugly head again.
No matter what those at the station or shift or Buck’s sister said about Buck never having served. Before finally forcing the order of silence about their thoughts on the issue with well stated remarks and proof on the family’s Instagram that they also posted on Buck’s public postings that had huge followings. Suddenly, on Memorial Day nasty emails and calls were being received at the 118 and to the brass about the A-Shift’s disregard and outright publicly stated hatred of those who served their country. With the additional calls from Coronado asking just what the hell they were thinking to allow the vocal and physical abuse given to a man who served his country.
A-Shift was decommissioned as a whole and its full leadership was demoted while being told they would never hold power ever again. Everyone who was caught on the station’s cameras dissing anyone about their service to their country was forced to serve as training dummies that needed to be rescued from their current stupid acts by trainees at the academy for six months. This before they each were forced to separate and serve in other stations to break up the toxic mess that had been allowed to grow.
Buck and Eddie were off for the same six months before teaming up to become trainers at the academy in their specialty areas. This way they no longer had to worry if someone they didn’t trust would have their back when it mattered anymore.
Maddie and her parents were both served with Restraining Orders to stay away from their family and quit trying to contact them.
In the end they finally had peace in themselves and each other, as far as they were concerned, to hell with everyone else.
Next Memorial Day, the small family went to put flowers on soldier and sailor graves to let them know they were not forgotten on this day, or any others.
As the sun set over the graveyard they were in, they each stood proud with Eddie and Buck giving a parade ground salute and Chris putting his hand over his heart.
Overhead, from the nearby air force base, the planes flew in the missing man formation into the sunset.
And that was it meant to be soldiers.
