Thoughts on Sentinels

Perceptions of the brain and senses.
Or… I Constantly See Naked People – Superman

I take various lecture courses during the week, and one class in a course was on perceptions and the brain/senses. How the senses pick up a whole lot of things, and from what I understood, the differences between us and Sentinels were the brain filtering out the perceptions the senses picked up of most of what was picked up.
To quote Clark Kent/Superman he saw naked people, but he automatically filtered that out, so it didn’t disturb him.

The true difference between the fictional Sentinels and normal humans is that they have less of a filter than norms do. And have to train how to use it or go mad like Clark did.
And perception is also an illusion as proven in studies where wine taste testers and critics were given the same wine in different bottles. One with the label of an expensive bottler and the other from a cheap one.
These experts praised the expensive and castigated the same wine coming from the cheap label. Pro tasters who were tricked by illusions, brought on by their brain’s biased perceptions.

As with those testers tasting what they wanted, witnesses observe only what they think they observe. Filtered by the mind and their own biases, with their own minds filling in the blanks their own perceptions did not perceive till it is the truth to them.

This works in RL and in story writing. And in story writing with Sentinels, with the Sentinel’s own perceptions filling in their own blanks instead of their senses being so powerful.
